10 Ways to Add Charm to Your Home’s Exterior

February 19, 2015

For most people, a home is the most important purchase made in a lifetime. Your home is a source of pride and satisfaction. Dressing up your residence enhances your enjoyment of your home. Here are 10 ways to add your own personal character to your home’s exterior.

1. Change the Door

Your entryway is the first thing your guests notice as they approach your home. Replace a plain door with something more decorative or simply paint it a new color. Adding a door with a window or glass work also helps to increase you interior lighting.

2. Plant an Arbor

Construct an archway out of lattice works, and encourage vines to grow over the top of it. Place it over the top of your walk way to create a unique entry to your home. It is easy to incorporate small lights along the structure to illuminate it at night.

3. Add a Covered Entrance

A covered entrance is both stylish and functional. Enhance the look of your entry way, and get the benefit of protection from the elements as you enter and exit your home.

4. Hang a Lantern

Lighting is one of the best ways to improve the visual appeal, and lanterns come in many different styles. These upgrades improve the nighttime appearance, and are a charming feature still visible during the day.

5. Hang a Window Box

Window boxes add structural and landscaping appeal to your home’s exterior. When mounted properly and painted to blend with the rest of your home’s façade, they look as though they are part of the architecture. Plant flowers to add a splash of color.

6. Redo the Driveway

While your driveway usually isn’t the focal point of your exterior, it can be a distraction. Rework your cracked or poorly designed driveway to reduce the disharmony it may cause with the rest of your home’s visual presentation.

7. Add Dormer Windows

This is a costly architectural upgrade but it can be well worth the expense. If you are already remodeling the upstairs of your home, consider adding dormer windows to improve the interior lighting as well as the visual appeal of your exterior.

8. Install a New Roof

Installing a new roof is costly and complicated, but it has to be done at times. Match the color and style with the rest of your home. Find a material that is affordable, durable, and fits with the shape and design.

9. Add a Gate

A small gate creates an enclosed yard. A closed off section makes the yard appear to be deeper than it really is. This exclusive area is a great place to display your prized garden plants.

10. New Garage Doors

Like your driveway, your garage door is a large area that naturally tends to draw the eye when there is a problem. Replace an old garage door with one that fits the style of your home. Adding design features to your door like a row of windows also helps to break up the visual monotony.
