Tips that Top Home Designers Use

February 22, 2015

Once the holidays are over and all of the decorations come down, you may be left feeling like your home seems sort of empty. Before it’s time to research reviews of Balsam Hill trees again, make the most of your space sans holiday decor. If it’s time for an indoor makeover, read on for tips that the top designers keep in mind.

Wait to Choose the Paint Color

It stands to reason that you’d paint your walls before adding new furniture or decor, but if you do, you’re going to seriously narrow your options for furnishings. Pick out your artwork, rug, upholstery, etc. before settling on a paint color. There are a ton of paint colors to match the room’s decor, but not necessarily the right decor to match a specific paint color.

Quality Over Quantity

Instead of buying everything you possibly can with your budget, go for fewer pieces of furniture with a higher price tag. Good furniture isn’t cheap, but it’s a great investment because it’ll last for a really long time. Plus, overcrowding a room is a design no-no.

Arranging Furniture in a Room With a Rug

If the rug is huge and it can comfortably fit all of the room’s furniture, then go for it – this sets a tone of luxury. The rug should be large enough to fit the furniture while still leaving a minimum of 12 inches of floor on each side. If you have a small room, you’ll want to leave the furniture off the rug to make the most of your space. Choose a rug that will fit “inside” your furniture while still almost touching the legs – otherwise, the rug will look too small for the space.

Pick a Focus

Make something the shining star of each room. It can be a piece of artwork, a great chair, a light fixture, or a fabulous coffee table. Everything else in the room should be secondary, meaning it shouldn’t draw attention away from the focal point. If you have too many focal points of a room, there’ll be too much visual “noise.”

There aren’t any specific rules or guidelines that interior decorators use when creating the perfect space. If you find something out of the ordinary that works for you, go for it!
