Four Ways to Make Your Home Look More Expensive

May 11, 2015

Do you often find yourself staring at the pictures found on blogs and websites of expensive homes owned by celebrities? If so, you aren’t alone. Famous actors, investors and entertainers spend millions of dollars and work with interior decorators to make their homes look larger and more impressive. As much as you might like to spend thousands of dollars on throw pillows, you probably don’t have the cash to buy those items. With a few tips, you can make your home look more expensive for less.

Change Your Flooring

One of the first things people see when they enter your home is the flooring. Stained and ripped carpet, old tile and dingy hardwood floors can make your house look dated and cheap. Even if you can’t afford to completely rip out the old flooring, you can stain wood floors, steam clean carpets or paint tile floors. A few elegant rugs can also make your floors look better and more expensive.

Create a Bold Focal Point

Give your guests something to focus on with a bold and amazing focal point. Something as simple as a new lighting fixture hung in your entryway or above your dining room table will raise the eye and make the room feel larger and more spacious. You can also create a focal point with a selection of artwork hung on a wall or when you arrange your furniture in a new way.

Opt for Luxurious Fabrics

When you see photographs of the apartment owned by legendary hotel owner Stephen A Wynn, the first thing you notice is the fabric choices he and his wife made. Silk, satin and other luxurious fabrics abound in nearly every room. Even if you can’t afford to reupholster your living room couch, you can fake it with new linens draped over the couch. A super soft throw blanket tossed over a chair can make the room look more expensive too.

Cut Back on Clutter

While browsing though images of celebrity homes, you can’t help noticing the lack of clutter found in those homes. As much as you might love displaying all your favorite things, the more items you have out, the cheaper your home looks. Think of your favorite upscale hotel and how the rooms in that hotel look. You might see a few pieces of furniture and artwork, but you won’t see a lot of clutter.

Celebrities spend thousands of dollars on decorators and even more on the furniture and decorations used in their homes. You can give your home a similar look without spending nearly as much when you choose the right fabrics, add a focal point, change your floors and cut down on clutter.
