Pillow Choices

December 11, 2016

Choosing the right pillow for comfort is one of the aspects of getting a good night’s sleep. Naturally people want good quality pillows without the need to purchase new ones every couple of months. However, many times they do not realize their pillows could be the reason for interrupted sleep. Here are a few different types to consider when choosing pillows that are comfortable and attractive.

1. Memory Foam Pillows

Memory foam pillows are made from polyurethane and other chemicals. The foam softens when it comes in contact with body heat allowing it to form to the person sleeping on the pillow. When the weight is lifted from the pillow it returns it its original shape. This type of pillow is often chosen by those with neck and back problems.

2. Down Pillows

Down pillows are another choice. Good quality down pillows such as the ones available at Downtown Company are made using the layer of feathers from under the wings and belly of geese. These fine feathers are under the exterior feathers. Many people prefer the quality of hungarian down pillows due to their light weight and ability to adjust to body temperature.

3. Polyester Filled Pillows

Polyester filled pillows are some of the most inexpensive. They are made using a machine that blows very small polyester particles into the pillows. This type is filled to different densities according to the firmness and size of the pillow. This pillow was the major type for many years although their popularity has faded with the onset of other types that offer better support.

4. Gel Pillows

Gel pillows are made using polyurethane, silicone, or hypoallergenic polyester gel fiberfill. They are often combined with memory foam as well. An affordable pillow, they provide firm support and softness at the same time. They help to regulate the body temperature of the user and offer support for those with back or neck problems.

5. Latex Pillows

Latex pillows are made using a white liquid or sap from the bark of a rubber tree. This sap has rubber particles and when mixed with chemicals and fillers they are molded into a pillow. These pillows provide support while remaining soft and they typically last about three years before they begin to flatten. They offer pain relief for some people suffering from neck and shoulder problems.

Pillows are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and materials. The final decision as to what type of pillow is best for your needs depends on personal preference and comfort.
